Presidents Cup First Round Bewl

Members arrived at Bewl following breakfast and early morning briefing in the Little Chef to find low air temperatures, water levels very high and quite coloured.

The wind was not too strong, but coming from a northerly direction and cold, changing at times and veering north west chilling the water surface and making life uncomfortable. The sun was bright, with the best part of the day weather wise occurring mid to late afternoon.

Our boats headed for several areas to try and drift close into the banks on the windward shore. Dunsters to Monty's seat, The Nose, Chingley, Seven Pound Creek and Bramble Bay all produced fish but the hot spot was Dunsters Point.Drifting close was not easy due to anchored boats and bank anglers. Very little if anything being caught up Hook Straight or in the main bowl.

Goldhead Damsels, tadpoles, cormorants, together with other larger bright coloured flies, fished deep appear to have been the most successful on the day. Lines varied from a range of intermediates to the odd fast sinker.

Due to bank angler’s lunch was taken by the ferry point jetty. Howard has contacted me wanting to know who was on the engine of the new boat that managed to hit the jetty and damage it, no it was not Tom this time.

Lunchtime was when tactical fly fishing reached a peak, (eat your heart out Jeremy Lucas, page 18 Bewl Angle) The "Bank Manger" first revealed a strong degree of prudence by producing a bottle of wine with a cork but conveniently no corkscrew! Only to be topped by our "Minor Celebrity", I am the person in the "Sharps Net Ad", (see this months Trout Fisherman, you have a lot to answer for Ray) - who had left his bottle of wine on the kitchen table! However more than enough wine was around to keep everybody happy. Finally our youngest and supposedly fittest competitor complained that he was frozen and wanted to return to his car for extra layers of clothing before the afternoons fishing.

Jack Sellwood was top individual rod with ten trout and best boat with Justin who had six. They mainly fished Dunsters Point area with sinking lines and attractors, well done lads.

After the" weight in" our friendly farmer was so excited at winning that he provided a mini-drama when he thought he had lost his car keys - only to eventually find them in a side pocket which he only ever used when he went fishing!!
