Stan Headley invented the Sedge-hog and the Hatching Half-hog for when the Trout are feeding on the surface of the water. I have adapted the Half-hog for Lullingstone because I found that the original black body only worked when the fish were feeding on black buzzers, I found that although the Trout would look at the black fly they would sometimes take a Shipman’s buzzer on the dropper, so I decided to put the Shipman’s body onto the half-hog and this fly now catches fish a lot later into the season than the original fly used to.
MethodRun the thread down the hook in touching turns catching in the thread as you go, dub the body on the hook remembering that you have a double wing so do not crowd the eye, Rib with the Pearl tinsel. Now comes the interesting bit , dub a small amount of Orange Seals fur onto the tread and take a couple of turns onto the hook and place the first deer hair wing over these turns , if you use the thread with seals fur dubbed on it the deer hair does not flare as much as plain thread. Once the first wing is in position dub some more Seals fur on the thread and complete the sequence with the white Deer hair. |
